Fantasy Football Cut-N-Go: The Clock Is Ticking for Beanie Wells

Cut-N-Go is Fantasy Football FanHouse's daily gathering of links from around the web, covering the goings-on in NFL Training Camp which have an impact on fantasy value.

Keep a close eye on this Saturday's preseason game as Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt expects rookie running back Chris "Beanie" Wells to get some reps against San Diego, but his time to shine appears to be dwindling fast. The Arizona Repbulic reported that Beanie Wells twisted his already sore ankle on Wednesday night at practice. With Tim Hightower moving well ahead Wells as the favorite for the starting job, this could be one of Wells' last chances to make a bid for the starting spot.

The rookie out of Ohio State seemed like a perfect fit to take the reigns in the backfield and raised a lot of fantasy eyebrows as a favorite choice for a 2009 sleeper. Now his ADP is slipping fast and his value as a fantasy threat for the early part of the season appear to be slim to none. Never say never, but this is looking like an uphill battle for Wells.

Let's take a look around the rest of the league to see what other fantasy relevant news is breaking.

Old standby running back Ladell Betts appears to have regained some Redskin confidence as coach Jim Zorn announced that Betts will become the team's primary third down and goalline and two minute drill running back. The Washington Post reports that Zorn wants to monitor the workload for Clinton Portis and keep his carries down, so this news does not bode well for the Portis faithful and his touches and touchdowns should suffer.

Marvin Harrison continues his job hunt, but the AP reports that the Titans are not interested. Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy continues to pull strings for his former star, saying he believes Harrison would make a great fit for the Chicago Bears.

According to the St. Louis Dispatch, the St. Louis Rams have Ahman Green on speed dial in the event that one of their players should suffer an injury at the running back position. Apparently the Rams are living in bizarro world, because some people, myself included, actually credit Ahman Green for inventing the injury at the running back position. Green has been cooked for about four years now.

In uvula jabbing news, Brett Favre is expected to suit up and play a whopping one series in the Viking's preseason home opener against the Kansas City Chiefs according to the Star Tribune.

The Denver Post reports that Brandon Marshall's absence from practice has helped make tight end Tony Scheffler a favorite receiver for new quarterback Kyle Orton. This should be an interesting storyline to follow as many pundits expect Scheffler's numbers to take a hit due to decreased tight end usage from head coach Josh McDaniels, but Tony Scheffler makes a good check down option for Orton, a longtime fan of the check down throw.

Tom Brady made news in the Boston Herald as he took a few good whacks from the Bengals defense. With fans gasping for air as Brady took a hard hit from defensive end Robert Geathers on a sack, Brady popped right up after landing on the surgically repaired knee. Brady's numbers were a sterile 4-8 for 57 yards, but the durability issue appears to be temporarily put to rest.

ESPN's Bill Williamson addresses the question that has begun floating around in Kansas City, which is whether or not Matt Cassel's 2008 success came largely to due a solid supporting cast or to his own talent. Cassel has struggled throughout camp and raised eyebrows as to whether he will ultimately be the guy in Kansas City. Coach Todd Haley remains confident in his quarterback, but keep an eye on this as the NFL is not exactly known for its long grace periods.
