Adding Coaches to Fantasy Football Rosters, Crazy?

Things that make you go "hmmmm." I've been tossing this idea around ever since watching the Super Bowl and considering what a great job both Ken Whisenhunt and Mike Tomlin have done with their short tenures in Arizona and Pittsburgh, respectively; would it make sense to add coaches to the fantasy football roster?

Before you start thinking of all the reasons that this does not make sense, hear me out, because there certainly exist a lot of those -- the most obvious being that it's pretty impossible to measure a coach's individual contribution. That said, a lot of coaches have discernible habits and bad lineups that can, in theory, lead to some level of predictability in their outcomes. Thus, the more I think about this, I'd like to see coaches in the fantasy lineup. They have to be at least as predictable as the kicker, which has to be the silliest element in fantasy sports, that we try to predict outcomes from on a weekly basis.

So, enough prepping, let's look at some of the stats that I think could be included in the coaches' fantasy stats and you tell me if it makes sense. I'm already sold ...For starters, there are plenty of pretty obvious categories which could be considered as related to the coaches' contribution. Those that come to mind first include third-down conversions, total yards allowed, total yards gained, wins, and penalties. The total yardage stats are probably a bit of a crap shoot, but penalties, third-down conversions and wins would be fairly relevant.

Next, there are some more esoteric categories that I think would make this fun. For additional assessment of the coaches' performance, we could consider successful challenges, challenges blown and a fourth-down bonus. To clarify that last one, if a coach goes for a 4 and 2 and gets it, you could get a +2 bonus with a points scale depending on the situation. Furthermore, if you fail on a 4th and inches, that is -2 points at least. Finally, there could be a points allocation for various outcomes. For instance, points could be given for come-from-behind victories, blowouts, or even making a strength of opponent bonus.

All in all, I keep going back to evaluating the idea of adding the coach and nixing the kicker. Sure, the kicker scores actual points, so it's an easy assessment, but replacing the kicker with a coach just seems to reflect real football knowledge versus pure luck. At this point, I'm just throwing this around for discussion, but I'd be curious for some other opinions. After all, AOL does own a solid fantasy football service in Fleaflicker, so who knows, maybe we could make it a reality. Stranger things have happened.
