Weeding through those unwieldy waiver wires requires a keen eye and a quick trigger. Thus, Waiver Wire Wonders provides a weekly snapshot of players worthy of consideration who should be available on a good portion of league waiver wires. Enjoy those pickups...If you are like me and surrounded by a glass case of emotion after two lousy games that ended your championship hopes in two leagues, making waiver wire moves is not exactly your top priority. Instead, that honor goes to talking yourself off of the ledge and convincing yourself that fantasy basketball is actually sort of fun. Since we all know that is a lie, let's take it for the team and plow on for another round of waiver wire wonders for the lucky few who get to compete for the title next weekend -- and for the rest of us to go out with a bang in the lousy third-place game, or worse, the consolation bracket.
Matt Schaub (QB, Texans) – I'm guessing if you are still reading this column, you probably have a guy named Manning, Warner or Brees on your roster, so at this point, you probably are not scouring the waiver wire too much at your quarterback slot. In the event that you do want a little padding for your QB situation, Schaub is coming off two very formidable performances. He helped propel the vast majority of Andre Johnson owners to a victory and should continue the trend with Oakland this week. After seeing what Cassel did Sunday to the Raiders defense, Schaub looks like a mighty fine start against Arizona.
Tashard Choice (RB, Cowboys) – With Marion Barber remaining questionable and looking generally bad on Sunday with a 0.25 yards-per-carry average on eight tries, Choice remains a pretty solid play this week after averaging over 10 yards per carry with a score against a stout Giants defense. Choice still has to face one of the league's toughest defenses in the Ravens this week, but considering he has played great against both the Steelers and the Giants, it does not behoove any of us to question Choice any longer.
Dennis Northcutt (WR, Jaguars) – From the random department, Dennis Northcutt busted loose of the chains that are the Jacksonville passing game and reeled in five balls for 127 yards and a touchdown. Given what is at stake in Week 16, I would not recommend picking up Northcutt at this point, but if he keeps up this type of play for the next couple of weeks, he is worth a mental note heading into next season.
Dallas Clark (TE, Colts) – We all know the rules; whenever a breakout game comes against the Lions; consider it an outlier. Still, it remains tough to balk at a twelve-catch performance no matter who the opponent. Simply put, that means, if nothing else, that Clark was targeted at least twelve times. Any tight end that gets over twelve looks in a game is worthy of consideration. With Peyton Manning looking better and better with the playoffs looming, Clark is definitely worth the look if your other options are not performing to your liking.
Sammy Morris (RB, Patriots) – Again, I tend to doubt anyone left with much to play for this week is scouring the wires to fill a key position, but do not forget that Sammy Morris has now scored a touchdown in three straight games and cranked out 117 yards on the ground against Oakland on Sunday.
LaMont Jordan (RB, Patriots) – I figured I'd throw LaMont in the mix as well for the Boston homers. In New England's romp of the Raiders on Sunday, Jordan also added 97 yards and a touchdown.
Kevin Faulk (RB, Patriots) – What, you thought two Patriots running backs was enough? Nope, Kevin Faulk also rushed for 45 yards and caught six passes for 66 yards and a touchdown. Realistically, I would not support an add out of New England's backfield this late in the season with the committee back in full effect, but clearly they were firing on all cylinders on Sunday.
P.J. Pope (RB, Broncos) – Can't get enough of that ravaged Denver backfield? Well, next in line is P.J. Pope. Pope split the carries with Tatum Bell and had the better showing with 51 rushing yards, 21 receiving yards, and a score. Pope looks like a fine add at this point with Buffalo's mediocre run defense next up for the Broncos.
